Blog EntryUnforeseen (music) consequences...Apr 8, '08 12:22 AM
for everyone
I had the most noble of... strike that... time honored... no.. well some sort of intentions, anyhow.

I spend a lot of time working in my lab-o-doom home office, doing the telecommute thing.  My Bride wanders into my office with that come hither look about her, and she asked if I was listening to classical music.

Stupid me points out, "No - just hold music.  Waiting for a con call to start and had the phone on speaker".

The come hither look dissipated.

I, being not always so stupid, took that to heart.  I do like classical music, so this is not a terrible cross to bear.  It was time to update my music anyhow, so I added a couple tunes to my rotation, and made sure they were the first tracks when the car starts.   (Both performed by Yoko Kanno - the cello version of the Myung theme and Shadow of Doubt - sound tracks some of you might recognize)  Also updated my in house play lists as well.

It must have made an impression.... Somewhere this Spring my little one gets it in her head that she wants to switch from the violin to cello in orchestra.  We picked the violin (and she was doing great), but she really wanted the cello.  Don't know... might be some of the cello players too... whatever the trigger, she convinced my Bride it was worth doing - even if she had to pony up her own cash, deal with dog poo, or anything else a nine year old could bargain with.  The shop let us try one out this week, and she spent many hours of her Spring break working out the fingering on the instrument.  Been a while since I've seen her so determined to master something.  Way cool.

Anyhow, looks like our brood will be adding a cello.  Even the half or three quarter sized instruments are monstrous.  This has logistical nightmare written all over it.  Should make for a fun summer.

If my wife came in with the come hither look, I'd put my phone on mute...

cello! i love the cello. absolutely. it has the warmest, most emotionally evocative sound of any of the stringed instruments. cello players are also a different breed, maybe this speaks also to her personality... a bit of a rebel maybe? A little Jacqueline du Pré in the making?

i think its awesome that you foster music in your kids. and by the sounds of it, your daughter is really into it, hell if i practiced as hard as you describe when i was 9, i probably wouldn't have to work a day job!

Oh, the phone was muted while I waited.... I was just not quick enough to realize the opportunity that might have presented itself.

I really dig cello music. She is a handful. I suspect there might be a bit of a sub culture on the cello side, and thus the draw. Tis OK. I'm really looking forward to hearing her cello paired up with my Bride's violin.

This appears to be a setup, however. Formal lessons start tonight apparently, so this went from the *if* to *when* while I was not looking. Just found out the shop will let her keep her violin until she completes this seasons orchestra and keep the cello in the interim. I am just a pawn in all of this. (grin)
