Blog EntryPerforming at "David Hasselhoff" dayJul 23, '07 9:49 AM
for everyone
Our little one plays in a summer orchestra.  One of the highlights is they get to do play the national anthem on the field at one of the St. Paul Saints games.

Of course, one of the more surreal parts about the game itself was it was "David Hasselhoff" day - complete with Mr. Knight Rider posters, t-shirts, and other paraphernalia.  Little one asked who is he, and was told it was a German thing.  She shrugged and continued on.

The event, however, almost did not happen.  She watched in horror as a pretty good sized rainstorm started as they drove over.  This, of course, would have prevented any playing of expensive wooden instruments on the field.  Visions of 'wasted' practicing were clearly on her mind.

As they reached the field, the sky cleared out and everything went according to plan.  Star Spangled Banner was performed, baseball treats were consumed, and even a foul ball tossed up and taken home!  She had a great time - though I suspect it was more to do with all of the activities surrounding the event than the game itself.

Later that week she asked, "Dad, you are German.  Do you like David Hasselhoff?".  Sorry kiddo - I'm not that German. (grin)

Might need to hit another game this summer.  Who knew...

Saints games are a lot of fun.

Heh. I introduced one German (BoE) to baseball at a Saints game, many moons ago. We still have some plastic cups we saved from it (hey, we're packrats).

Cheers,

I have a Count Chocula bobblehead from a Saints game (it was Cereal Night). My packrattery is cooler than yours!

Believe me, you do not want to get into a packrat contest. :-P My family actually hands down junk from generation to generation and can't bear to throw it out (if only I were making this up).

Very small case in point: My dad has numerous cigar boxes and Gerber baby food jars full of rusty old screws and nails from his dad. (The crazy part is, the cigar boxes might actually be worth something as collector's items...) IIRC he also has every license plate for every car he ever owned (which is a lot of them) and I believe he even has the ones from his dad. That's only barely scratching the surface and doesn't bring up my mom (who's almost as bad) or my brother or myself.

As for myself, the only reason I don't have more packrattish stuff here is because I came to Germany and had to start over. Most of my stuff is still in America (though I did bring a few things over).

Yes, we are a sad bunch. Even sadder: BoE fits right in. ;-)

Cheers,

Ethelred

Bring it on. I am descended from a woman who saved all of her Mrs. Butterworth syrup bottles because they would be worth something someday.

My God. Are we related?
